Exploring Tafelberg (Table Mountain)

My adventure began with the iconic Tafelberg, a flat-topped mountain that dominates Cape Town’s skyline. Hiking up Table Mountain is a must for any visitor. I chose the Platteklip Gorge trail, which is steep but rewarding. The panoramic views from the summit are simply stunning, offering a sweeping vista of Cape Town, the Atlantic Ocean, and Robben Island.

What to do:

  • Hike Platteklip Gorge or take the cable car for a less strenuous option.

  • Visit the Table Mountain National Park visitor centre to learn about the flora and fauna.

  • Bring a camera for the breathtaking views, especially at sunrise or sunset.

Where to stay:

I stayed in a cozy guesthouse in the city center, close to the mountain’s base. There are many options ranging from budget hostels to luxury hotels with views of the mountain.

Traditional food:

After the hike, I enjoyed a hearty meal of bobotie, a Cape Malay dish made with spiced minced meat and topped with an egg custard. It’s a comforting dish that reflects the region’s diverse culinary heritage.

Safety advice:

The weather on Table Mountain can change quickly. Always carry water, wear sturdy shoes, and check the weather forecast before starting your hike. Avoid hiking alone, especially in the late afternoon.

Discovering Muizenberg’s Coastal Trails

Next, I traveled to Muizenberg, famous for its colorful beach huts and excellent surfing conditions. The walking trails here are gentler and perfect for a relaxed day outdoors.

What to do:

  • Walk along the Muizenberg beachfront promenade.

  • Explore the Silvermine Nature Reserve trails nearby for a mix of mountain and coastal views.

  • Try surfing or take a beginner’s lesson if you’re feeling adventurous.

Where to stay:

Muizenberg offers charming beachfront guesthouses and boutique hotels. I stayed in a small B&B just steps from the beach, which made early morning walks especially enjoyable.

Traditional food:

Seafood is a highlight here. I recommend trying snoek fish, often grilled or smoked, served with chakalaka (a spicy vegetable relish).

Transport tips:

Muizenberg is accessible by train from Cape Town, which is a scenic and budget-friendly option. Local taxis and Uber are also available.

Safety advice:

The beach is popular but be cautious of strong currents if swimming. Stick to patrolled areas and avoid isolated spots after dark.

Hiking and Relaxing in George

George, located further east along the Garden Route, offers a different vibe with its lush forests and mountainous terrain. The walking trails here are peaceful and less crowded.

ree

What to do:

  • Explore the Outeniqua Nature Reserve trails, which wind through indigenous forests and offer chances to spot wildlife.

  • Visit the historic town center for a glimpse of colonial architecture and local markets.

  • Take a scenic drive to nearby Wilderness for more coastal trails.

Where to stay:

I found a lovely lodge nestled in the forest, providing a quiet retreat after a day of hiking.

ree

Traditional food:

Try the potjiekos, a slow-cooked stew made in a cast-iron pot, often enjoyed with friends and family.

Transport tips:

Renting a car is the best way to explore George and surrounding areas. Public transport options are limited.

Safety advice:

Stick to marked trails and carry a map or GPS device. Wildlife encounters are rare but possible, so keep a respectful distance.

Experiencing Knysna’s Forest and Lagoon Trails

ree

Knysna is famous for its lagoon and dense forests. The walking trails here combine water views with rich greenery, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers.

What to do:

  • Walk the Knysna Heads trails for spectacular views where the lagoon meets the ocean.

  • Explore the Featherbed Nature Reserve, accessible by ferry, with guided walks through coastal forest.

  • Visit the Knysna Waterfront for shopping and dining.

Where to stay:

I stayed in a charming guesthouse overlooking the lagoon, which offered stunning morning views.

Traditional food:

Knysna oysters are a must-try, fresh from the lagoon and served raw or grilled.

Transport tips:

A car rental is recommended to explore the wider area. Local taxis are available but less frequent.

Safety advice:

Be cautious near water edges and follow local advice on trail conditions. Some paths can be slippery after rain.
