The History of Windhoek

Windhoek’s history reflects a mix of indigenous cultures and colonial influences. The area was originally inhabited by the Nama and Herero people. The city’s name comes from the Afrikaans word meaning "windy corner," a nod to its often breezy climate.

In the late 19th century, German colonists established Windhoek as the administrative center of German South West Africa. This period left a lasting architectural and cultural imprint, visible in landmarks like the Christ Church and the Alte Feste fortress. After World War I, South African administration took over until Namibia gained independence in 1990. Today, Windhoek stands as a symbol of Namibia’s journey from colonial rule to a vibrant, independent nation.
